the art of tumblr without tumblr

I have relatives who have lost work, have struggled, and have gone for long periods of time without Health Care. Suppose my adorable cousin Wendigo has cancer, but my Uncle Mathias has just been laid off and can’t afford reasonable Health Care. Suppose another cousin has been born with a blood disorder, costing thousands of dollars every year to keep her alive. Should we really just let insurance companies condemn her family to bankruptcy trying to fund her treatment just because they don’t want to go out on a limb and help her?

This isn’t about Capitalism. What about charity and service? What about giving to those in need? Are you really, truly suggesting that we only let the strong workers survive in our country? What’s been suggested here isn’t Capitalism or the American Way—it’s Social Darwinism. Survival of the Fittest. Weed out those not fit to survive. Ignore those unlucky sick citizens who’ve lost their jobs.

I really like the inscription on the Statue of Liberty:
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tossed to me.
I lift my lamp beside the golden door”

We’ve been given a lot. We’re financially secure, in pretty good health, and not in danger of losing our homes. Unfortunately, there are millions of people in our country who aren’t so lucky. MILLIONS. Don’t get me wrong about this—Thomas Jefferson was a brilliant, inspired man who helped forge our great nation. But I think he’s wrong about this. When people say “Universal Health Coverage,” or “Health Care Overhaul,” it doesn’t mean “Mooching for the Masses.” I think this is going to really help people who are out of work, down on their luck, or very very sick.

You can call Health Care socialism if you want. You can call it anything you want. But it’s not true socialism. True socialism would not provide room for other companies to exist. Let’s face it; there are some greedy, greedy people out there who are unwilling to reach out and help people if it means a cut to their billion-dollar pension. People are dying because they can’t afford to buy health insurance. If this “socialism” will save innocent Americans, I’m all for it, and I think Thomas Jefferson would be too.

—My nephew posted this on his facebook page. I think he nailed it and I completely agree. Just saying.
